NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR REFUGEES, MIGRANTS AND
INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS TO PARTNER WITH NIMC
The honourable federal commissioner, National
Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFR),
Hajiya Hadiza Sani Kangiwa, has expressed
the Commission’s interest to partner with the National Identity Management
Commission.
Hajiya Hadiza Kangiwa disclosed this when
she led a delegation of senior management of the commission on a courtesy visit
to the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Chris Onyemenam,
in Abuja.
With over 1.5 million internally displaced
persons and refugees around the country, the NCFR is saddled with the
responsibility of uniquely identifying this target group, to aid proper
documentation and services delivery to them.
Speaking at the meeting which was held at
the boardroom of the NIMC headquarter, Hajiya Kangiwa stressed the possibility
of including special data fields for displaced persons and the most vulnerable
sub-groups within the IDP community to enable her Commission key into the
National Identity Database and to function more seamlessly in the provision of
aids and other services to those who actually need them.
She was particular
about the strategic relevance of the National e-ID Card for the payment of
financial supports to properly identified persons. The collaboration with NIMC
would, in her words “prevent the Commission from re-inventing the wheel, cut
cost and ensure accountability”.
While responding, DG/CEO NIMC, Barr. Chris
Onyemenam, welcomed the team very warmly and expressed NIMC’s willingness and
availability to key into the NCFR’s giant strides.
He demonstrated NIMC’s
commitment to the enrolment of internally displaced persons into the National
Database by reminding the team of NIMC’s previous efforts to reach IDP’s
through the National Orientation Agency and NEMA.
At the end of the meeting, it was agreed
that modalities be set in motion by both Commissions for the piloting of a
partnership in the FCT.
